    With Acronis Storage 1.x products receiving End of Life status you need to migrate over to the latest 2.x Acronis Storage version to continue receiving product updates and support.

    This article is intended for the partners that are migrating from Acronis Storage Gateway 1.x with underlying Object Storage backend (Azure, S3, Swift, etc). If you are using Acronis Storage Gateway with the local backend – please refer to Quick Start Guide to proceed with the migration.

    IMPORTANT!

    Due to the significant technology changes between how Acronis Storage Gateway 1.x and Acronis Backup Gateway 2.x interact with Object Storage the archives backed up to the old storage cannot be transferred to the new one. We propose the following two migration scenarios:

    1. Deploy a new Acronis Backup Gateway 2.x in place of the existing Acronis Storage Gateway 1.x. This will allow your clients to seamlessly switch over to the new storage version but all backups will need to be recreated from scratch with no historical slices remaining from the old Acronis Storage Gateway. This way is more efficient if you have limited storage space on your Object Storage.
    2. Gradual approach with deploying Acronis Backup Gateway 2.x alongside the existing Acronis Storage Gateway 1.x. You will be able to direct your clients to the new storage at your discretion and keep the old storage data available for prolonged period if need be. This way requires additional storage space available on your backend in order to keep old and new sets of client backups simultaneously.

    Approach 1: replace old 1.7 gateway with new Acronis Storage 2.x

    1. Deploy new Acronis Storage 2.x according to the Quick Start guide .
    2. Follow instructions in this section of the Quick Start guide in order to register Acronis Backup Gateway server and connect it to the Object Storage.
    3. On the DNS configuration step, enter any random name for this Storage, not the actual DNS name. This setting will not be in use.
    4. Using any SSH client, log in to the Acronis Storage node where you have configured Acronis Backup Gateway.
    5. Issue the following command to unregister this Storage from Acronis Cyber Cloud:
      vstorage-abgw-register unregister
    6. Using the following commands, remove the configuration files left after you unregister the Storage:
      rm -f /mnt/vstorage/vols/acronis-backup/certs/*
      rm -f /mnt/vstorage/vols/acronis-backup/certs/.abgw.abc-registration-info
    7. Open your Acronis Cyber Cloud management portal and navigate to the Storage tab.
    8. Locate the record of your current Storage. Note the NAME and ID of your old Acronis Storage Gateway instance as they are written in Acronis Cyber Cloud portal.
    9. Issue the following command on your Acronis Storage 2.3 to register it under the existing Acronis Storage Gateway record:
      vstorage-abgw-register register -s cloud.acronis.com -u <user_name> -a <storage_name> -i <storage_id>
      where <storage_name> and <storage_id> are the NAME and the ID noted in step 8

    10. Direct all the Agents to this new empty instance of Acronis Storage. Depending on how your Storage is registered in Acronis Cyber Cloud and exposed to the Internet, do one of the following:
      1. If Acronis Storage is registered under a DNS name: change Public IP in DNS A record to the one of your new Acronis Storage 2.x
      2. If Acronis Storage has a NATted IP: configure your NAT mapping in order to translate your Public IP to the Local IP of a new Acronis Storage 2.x instance.
      3. If your Acronis Storage gateway has a public IP directly assigned to it and is registered in Acronis Cyber Cloud directly by this IP without a domain name: contact Acronis Technical Support.
      4. Run a test backup to verify that everything works correctly. In case of any unexpected result, please contact Acronis Technical support.

     

    Approach 2: Gradually move accounts

    1. Deploy new Acronis Storage 2.x in according to the Quick Start guide .
    2. Follow instructions in this section of the Quick Start guide to register Acronis Backup Gateway server and connect it to the Object Storage.
    3. While creating new accounts make sure to assign them with your new Acronis Storage 2.x as a Cloud Storage.
    4. Follow the workflow below to gradually move existing accounts:
      1. Create new group for the existing Customer. Assign your new Acronis Storage 2.3 instance as its Cloud Storage.
      2. Create a user for this group.
      3. Create backup plans similar to the existing groups.
      4. Move the Agents this new group and assign it with the backup plans.
